Plant It Forward: The Niagara Gardener’s Victoria Day Perennial Guide

Victoria Day weekend has long been the unofficial starting gun of the Canadian gardening season — and for good reason. In Niagara’s Zone 6b, May long weekend marks the sweet spot when last-frost risk fades, soil has warmed, and the garden is finally ready to receive its full cast of characters. There’s no better time to invest in perennials — the plants that reward your patience year after year, season after glorious season.

WHAT ARE PERENNIALS?

Unlike annuals, which complete their lifecycle in a single growing season, perennials return year after year from their established root systems. Plant them once, and they’ll be part of your garden story for years — often spreading and multiplying as they mature.

VICTORIA DAY: THE GREEN LIGHT

In Niagara (Zone 6b), the average last spring frost falls around May 15th — so Victoria Day weekend is your official planting green light. The soil has warmed, days are lengthening, and your plants can settle in beautifully before summer heat arrives.

THE ZONE 6B ADVANTAGE

Niagara’s Zone 6b brings average minimum winter temperatures of -23°C to -17°C — cold enough for true winter dormancy, mild enough for a gorgeous variety of perennials. You truly get the best of both worlds.

PERENNIALS VS. ANNUALS

Annuals dazzle for one season; perennials build equity. A well-chosen perennial collection grows fuller and more beautiful with each passing year, spreading naturally and offering far better long-term value per dollar spent.

Why Perennials Are the Smartest Investment in Your Garden

There’s a reason experienced gardeners always seem to have effortlessly lush yards — the secret is usually a perennial backbone planted years earlier. While it’s tempting to fill every bed with the instant gratification of annuals, perennials play the long game and pay serious dividends. In Year 1, you plant. In Year 2, they establish and grow more vigorously. By Year 3, they’re often doubling in size and offering divisions you can share with neighbours or scatter to new corners of your yard.

In Niagara specifically, this investment is especially sound. Our Zone 6b climate means most perennials that survive a Canadian winter return reliably each spring, and our relatively mild Niagara summers give them a generous window to thrive. Perennials also develop deeper root systems than annuals, making them significantly more drought-tolerant once established — a real bonus during our typically hot July and August stretches.

Victoria Day isn’t just a holiday — it’s the traditional last-frost marker for Niagara gardeners. Planting perennials this weekend gives them the entire growing season to establish strong roots before their first winter dormancy.

Top Perennials for Niagara Zone 6b Gardens

Echinacea (Coneflower) — A Niagara powerhouse. Blooms July through September, draws pollinators all summer, and its dried seed heads provide winter interest and bird food. Fully hardy in Zone 6b, available in everything from classic purple to rich orange and cream white.

Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan) — Cheerful, low-maintenance, and incredibly tough. Blooms from midsummer into fall, spreads readily, and looks stunning in naturalistic or cottage-style plantings. Self-seeds generously, so your original investment multiplies itself.

Hosta — The undisputed king of the shade garden. Perfect for Niagara’s shadier spots beneath maples and oaks. Available in sizes from teacup-small to dinner-plate-enormous, with foliage ranging from deep green to blue-grey to golden chartreuse.

Salvia (Perennial) — Lavender-blue spires from June right through to frost, especially with regular deadheading. Thrives in our dry, hot summers once established. Bees and butterflies simply cannot resist it.

Astilbe — For moist, part-shaded spots, astilbe delivers feathery plumes in white, pink, red, and purple from June through August. Its dried plumes add graceful structure to the winter garden long after frost arrives.

Sedum (Stonecrop) — Nearly indestructible. Thrives in dry, sunny conditions and blooms in late summer and fall when the garden most needs colour. Varieties like ‘Autumn Joy’ are legendary for very good reason.

Daylily (Hemerocallis) — Tough, adaptable, and blindingly beautiful during their bloom period. With hundreds of cultivars in every colour imaginable, there’s a daylily for every garden. Divide every 3–4 years for best performance.

How to Plant Perennials for Long-Term Success

Getting your perennials off to the right start takes a little preparation, but the payoff is years of reliable beauty. The most common mistake is treating perennials like annuals — rushing them into unprepared soil without the amendments they need to thrive through both Niagara’s winters and our hot summers.

Dig a planting hole at least twice the width of the root ball, but only as deep as the root ball itself — you want the crown (where roots meet stems) right at soil level. Amend generously with compost: it improves drainage in clay-heavy Niagara soils and helps sandy soils retain moisture. Water thoroughly after planting, and apply a 5–8 cm layer of mulch around (never over) the crown to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and buffer against our Zone 6b freeze-thaw cycles in late fall and early spring.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Planting too deep — Most perennials want their crown right at or just barely below soil level. Planting too deep invites crown rot, especially in heavier Niagara soils that hold moisture well.

Skipping consistent watering in Year 1 — Even drought-tolerant perennials need consistent moisture during their first season while roots are establishing. Don’t assume day-one hardiness.

Crowding at planting — It’s tempting to fill space immediately, but perennials need room to mature. Follow the tag spacing — they’ll look full and beautiful by Year 2 or 3.

Cutting everything back in fall — In Zone 6b, leaving perennial foliage standing until spring provides insulation against cold snaps and adds winter garden interest. Wait until April to cut back most perennials.

Ignoring sun and soil requirements — A shade-lover planted in full sun will struggle regardless of soil quality. Match plant to place for effortless, low-maintenance success.

The Long Weekend That Changes Your Garden Forever

Victoria Day weekend gardening is a Niagara tradition — and there’s something genuinely joyful about the way our community collectively steps outside this long weekend, trowels in hand, optimistic about the season ahead. At The Watering Can in Vineland, this weekend always feels like a celebration. The greenhouse hums with activity, neighbours run into neighbours in the Seasonal Garden Centre, and everyone’s comparing notes on what they’re planting and where.

Our Vineland location at 3725 King St is open today, Victoria Day, from 9am–5pm. And if you’ve been waiting for the right moment to invest in perennials — today is the final day of our Perennial Sale, with 20% off all perennials in the Vineland Seasonal Garden Centre. It’s the long weekend. It’s Niagara. Go plant something beautiful.

Come Grow With Us This Long Weekend

We Put an Oreo in Your Iced Latte. You’re Welcome.

There are days that call for flowers, days that call for pastries, and days that call for something cold, creamy, and completely over-the-top delicious. Today is one of those days. Meet our brand new Oreo Iced Latte — now officially on the menu at The Watering Can Café in Vineland, and yes, it’s exactly as good as it sounds.

Available only at our Vineland location — one more reason to make the trip to The Watering Can’s destination café.

ICED & READY

Perfect for Niagara’s warm May days. Whether you’re visiting the greenhouse or browsing the shop, cool off in style.

SIP & WANDER

Pair your latte with a fresh pastry from our in-house Pastry Market, then take a stroll through the Workshop Village.

A New Menu Star Is Born

Our café team has done it again. The Oreo Iced Latte brings together smooth espresso, cold milk, and the unmistakable flavour of everyone’s favourite chocolate sandwich cookie — chilled over ice and ready to become your new warm-weather obsession. It’s indulgent without being over-the-top, and every sip is equal parts coffee pick-me-up and dessert treat.

We didn’t set out to reinvent the iced latte. We just asked ourselves: what would make a beautiful afternoon at The Watering Can even better? The answer, apparently, was Oreos. (We should have known.)

Our Oreo Iced Latte is made with real espresso and house-crafted ingredients — never a syrup-heavy shortcut. Because you deserve the real thing.

Why Iced Coffee Season Is the Best Season

Here in Niagara, May marks that magical turning point — the days are warming up, the gardens are waking, and suddenly everything feels a little more alive. It’s the perfect time to treat yourself to something cold and celebratory. Whether you’re coming to pick up fresh cut flowers, browse our tropical plants, or attend one of our Workshop Village sessions, a cool iced latte in hand just makes the whole experience feel more like a day out and less like a chore.

And let’s be honest: there’s something deeply satisfying about enjoying a gorgeous iced drink surrounded by blooms and greenery. The Watering Can Café sits right in the heart of our Vineland destination, steps from the greenhouse and the Pastry Market. It’s a setting that makes even a Tuesday feel like a mini-vacation.

What Goes Into the Perfect Iced Latte

Quality Espresso — The backbone of any great latte. Ours is pulled fresh to order, so you’re always getting peak flavour in every glass.

Cold, Creamy Milk — The rich, smooth base that carries all those wonderful flavours without overpowering the coffee.

Oreo Magic — That signature cookies-and-cream flavour that takes this drink from “really good iced latte” to “please put this in a loyalty programme immediately.”

Ice, Always — Plenty of it. On a warm Niagara afternoon, you’ll thank us.

The Right Setting — Surrounded by flowers, pastries, and good company. Hard to replicate at home.

Pair It With Something From the Pastry Market

Every new drink deserves a worthy companion, and our in-house Pastry Market delivers every single day. All of our baked goods are made fresh on-site — think buttery croissants, seasonal tarts, cookies, and rotating daily specials that our bakers dream up with the same creativity we bring to every arrangement in the shop. An Oreo Iced Latte alongside a freshly baked treat? That’s not just a snack. That’s a whole mood.

While You’re Here: The Full Watering Can Experience

One of the things we love most about our Vineland location is that it’s genuinely somewhere you want to stay for a while. Beyond the café and the Pastry Market, there’s our full greenhouse filled with tropicals, houseplants, and seasonal standouts — a lush escape no matter the weather. The Workshop Village offers hands-on floral and planting workshops for all skill levels, and our Tropical Garden Tea ($47/person, Tues–Sat) lets you dine surrounded by incredible greenery in a one-of-a-kind setting.

Think of a visit to The Watering Can as a full afternoon out — and now you’ve got the perfect iced latte to take along for the ride.

Thanks, Mom: The Most Beautiful Thank You Is Already in Bloom

For showing up, cheering us on, making things feel a little easier, and loving us through every season — this one’s for her.

To Every Mom Out There

There’s a kind of love that doesn’t need a grand announcement to be felt. It’s in the early morning coffees that appeared on the counter before you even asked. In the steady presence that made hard days feel less impossible. In the unconditional cheerleading that kept showing up, season after season, whether you deserved it in the moment or not. That love is quiet, enormous, and endlessly patient — and it belongs to Mom.

Mother’s Day is our chance to say out loud what we often take for granted in the everyday. And at The Watering Can, we believe the best way to say “I love you, thank you, I see you” is with something alive, something beautiful, and something that takes up a little space in the room — just like she does in your heart.

25+Years Celebrating Moms in Niagara

2Locations Stocked for Mother’s Day

TodayLast Day to Shop In-Store

Why Flowers Still Say It Best

Flowers have been the language of love, care, and celebration for centuries — and there’s a reason that tradition hasn’t gone anywhere. A fresh bouquet isn’t just a gift; it’s a gesture. It says you thought about her, you stopped, you chose, you went out of your way. And that effort? She notices.

Whether it’s a lush hand-tied arrangement bursting with ranunculus and garden roses, a simple wrapped bunch of her favourite blooms, or an elegant potted plant that will outlast the weekend — the act of giving flowers is an act of intention. It’s saying: you’re worth a little beauty in your life, and I wanted to be the one to bring it to you.

Today is your last chance to shop in-store for Mother’s Day gifting. We’re open today and closed tomorrow so Mom can have the day fully to herself — come see us at Vineland or St. Catharines before we close our doors tonight.

What We’ve Got Ready for Her

Our team has been working hard all week to make sure we’re stocked with everything you need to celebrate the moms in your life. Whether she’s a lover of classic elegance or wildflower whimsy, there’s something here with her name on it. Here’s a little of what you’ll find waiting for you in-store today:

Fresh-cut bouquets and hand-tied arrangements — Designed daily by our floral team, each one is a little work of art. Choose from our ready-made selections or ask about custom arrangements.

Potted plants and indoor tropicals — For the mom who loves a living gift that lasts. Our Tropical Garden is stocked with gorgeous specimens she’ll adore tending to all year long.

Pastry Market treats — Pair her flowers with something from our in-house bakery. All baked fresh daily — because flowers and pastries are basically the perfect duet.

Thoughtful add-ons and gifts — Candles, cards, and little extras to round out a gift that feels truly considered.

Urn Club memberships — The gift that keeps on giving all season long. Our Basic ($200) and Premium ($275) seasonal planter insert programs make for an unforgettable present she’ll appreciate every time she looks at her front door.

“My mom walked in not expecting much and walked out absolutely beaming. The team helped us put together something that felt so personal — she couldn’t stop talking about it all afternoon.” — A Watering Can customer, last Mother’s Day

A Note from Our Team

Every year at this time, our team takes a moment to reflect on the moms in our own lives — the ones who shaped us, supported us, and showed us what it looks like to love something fully and show up for it, every single day. We see that kind of devotion in the way our community cares for the things that grow: gardens tended with love, houseplants coaxed back to life, bouquets chosen with so much care.

That spirit is what The Watering Can is built on — and we’re so grateful to share it with you and yours. So from our family to yours: thank you, Mom. For everything. For showing up. For making things feel a little easier, season after season.

Plan Your Visit Today

We’re open today — Saturday, May 9th — at both our Vineland and St. Catharines locations. Come early for the best selection, and don’t hesitate to ask our team for help. We love helping people find the perfect thing for the perfect person.

Remember, we’re closed tomorrow (Mother’s Day itself, May 10th) so Mom can enjoy her day undisturbed. Today is the day — don’t let it slip by without something beautiful in your hands.

The Last-Minute Mother’s Day Secret

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and if you’re still figuring out how to make it special, you’re not alone — and you’re definitely not too late. The Watering Can is full of beautiful, thoughtful finds that say “I really thought about you” without requiring two weeks of planning or an Amazon Prime membership.

Fresh flowers. Handcrafted pastries. Lush tropical plants. Artisan gifts. All under one roof at our Vineland destination, waiting to help you pull off the most genuine kind of Mother’s Day surprise: one that actually feels like her.

Fresh Flowers: The Classic That Never Fails

There’s a reason flowers have been the universal language of love for centuries. A hand-selected bouquet from The Watering Can isn’t just pretty — it’s a carefully composed arrangement made by people who care deeply about every stem. Our fresh flower selection changes with the season, and right now our coolers are bursting with soft pinks, peachy corals, and the kind of mixed arrangements that make a room feel like a garden.

Whether she has a vase on every windowsill or has never owned a single floral arrangement in her life, fresh flowers from TWC are the kind of gift that stops her in her tracks. In the best possible way.

Not sure which bouquet to choose? Our team at both locations is happy to help you find something that suits her style — just ask. That’s what we’re here for.

Beyond the Bouquet: What Else She’ll Love

A Pastry Market treat — Everything in our Pastry Market is baked fresh in-house, daily. Think flaky croissants, elegant tarts, and seasonal creations that taste like they came from a little French bakery in the countryside. Pair with flowers for the easiest, most delicious gift combo imaginable.

A tropical or houseplant — If she loves greenery, a lush tropical plant is a gift that keeps growing (literally). Our greenhouse selection is extraordinary — from dramatic bird-of-paradise to trailing pothos and everything in between. Pick something that suits her light situation and she’ll think of you every time she waters it.

A greenhouse wander — Some of the best Mother’s Day moments aren’t bought, they’re experienced. Bring her along for a walk through our greenhouse at 3725 King St, Vineland. It’s warm, it smells incredible, and it’s the kind of place that makes people go quiet and just… breathe.

Artisan gifts and finds — We carry a lovely collection of gifts that go beyond the ordinary. Browse in-store and you might discover something unexpected that just feels right for your mom specifically.

“I came in looking for flowers and walked out with a bouquet, a pastry box, a little tropical plant, and the best morning I’d had in weeks. My mom cried happy tears. We’re going back every year.”

A Gentle Reminder: We’re Closed Sunday

Here’s the important bit: The Watering Can will be closed on Mother’s Day Sunday. So if you’re planning to stop by for flowers, pastries, or a plant, today or Saturday is your window. We’d hate for you to make the drive only to find the doors locked and a very apologetic sign.

Both our Vineland destination (3725 King St) and our St. Catharines floral boutique (18 James St) are open and ready for you before Sunday. Come early, take your time, and let us help you make this one count.

Make It a Morning: The Full TWC Mother’s Day Experience

If you want to go all out, here’s a simple formula that works every time: bring Mom to the Vineland location, walk the greenhouse together, pick out something beautiful, grab pastries from the Pastry Market, and end with a quiet moment over coffee. It’s the kind of morning she’ll talk about until next May.

And if you’ve been looking for a reason to finally book the Tropical Garden Tea — an intimate tea service inside our greenhouse at $47/person — Mother’s Day weekend is the perfect occasion. Book at thewateringcan.ca to secure your seats.

Don’t Wait Until Sunday

Visit us before Mother’s Day — we’re open and ready to help you find something she’ll truly love. Both locations. All the good stuff.

Floral design, Niagara wine, seasonal blooms, and a beautiful winery setting — honestly, it’s kind of the perfect summer evening.

Where Flowers Meet the Vineyard

There are few things more quintessentially Niagara than a golden summer evening in wine country. The rolling vines, the warm air, the clinking of glasses — and now, you can add a gorgeous floral arrangement to that picture too. The Watering Can’s Vineyard Collection workshops bring together two of life’s greatest pleasures: the art of floral design and the pleasure of Niagara’s world-class wine, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of the region’s finest wineries.

These aren’t your average flower classes. The Vineyard Collection is an experience — an evening out that happens to leave you with a stunning bouquet in hand and a warm glow in your heart. Each workshop is intimate, expertly guided, and rooted in the same warmth and passion that has defined The Watering Can for over 25 years in Niagara.

Welcome to the Family: Thirty Bench Wine Makers

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Thirty Bench Wine Makers has joined The Vineyard Collection lineup for this season. Tucked into the Beamsville Bench — one of Ontario’s most celebrated wine sub-appellations — Thirty Bench is known for producing some of the region’s most acclaimed Rieslings and Bordeaux-style reds. Their property is intimate, rooted in terroir, and dripping with the kind of character that makes for an unforgettable evening out.

Pair that atmosphere with The Watering Can’s signature floral instruction, a glass (or two) of exceptional Niagara wine, and a room full of people who came to have a genuinely good time — and you’ve got yourself one of the summer’s best nights out. Whether you’re an experienced arranger or someone who’s never held a pair of floral shears in your life, these workshops are designed for you. All materials are provided, all guidance is warm and hands-on, and all evenings end with both a beautiful creation and a full heart.

The Vineyard Collection workshops are selling out fast. Several dates are already gone — if there’s a winery or evening you’ve been eyeing, now is the moment to claim your spot before it disappears.

What to Expect on the Night

If you’ve never attended a Watering Can workshop before, here’s what you’re in for: a fully guided, hands-on floral experience led by our talented team of designers, set inside one of Niagara’s most beautiful winery venues. Everything you need is waiting for you when you arrive — fresh seasonal blooms, quality tools, and all the instruction you could ever want. The wine flows. The conversation flows. And by the end of the evening, you’ll have created something genuinely beautiful with your own two hands.

All skill levels welcome — Whether you’re a seasoned arranger or a total beginner, our guides meet you exactly where you are. No experience necessary — just enthusiasm.

All materials included — Fresh seasonal blooms, quality vessels, and professional floral tools are all provided. Just show up ready to create.

Stunning winery settings — Each workshop is hosted at one of Niagara’s premier wineries, so the ambiance does a lot of the heavy lifting before you even pick up a stem.

Wine is part of the evening — Sip and snip. Our Vineyard Collection evenings are designed to be social, relaxed, and genuinely fun.

Take your arrangement home — You leave with the bouquet you made yourself — a souvenir from a beautiful evening that will brighten your home all week.

“I came not knowing a single thing about flowers and left with an arrangement I was genuinely proud of — and a new favourite winery. The Vineyard Collection is the most fun I’ve had on a summer evening in Niagara.”

A Summer Rooted in Niagara

The Vineyard Collection is more than a workshop series — it’s a celebration of everything that makes Niagara special. This region has long been one of Canada’s most extraordinary places to grow things: the moderating influence of Lake Ontario, the Niagara Escarpment, and the rich soils of the Beamsville Bench give us both extraordinary wine grapes and an incredible growing season for blooms. In growing zone 6b, our summers are generous — warm enough to coax both lush florals and ripe Riesling grapes to their peak, with long evenings perfectly suited for exactly this kind of gathering.

At The Watering Can, we’ve always believed that flowers belong everywhere life is beautiful — at the table, in the home, and yes, in a vineyard on a warm summer night. The Vineyard Collection is our love letter to this region and to everyone who chooses to spend their summer evenings with us.

Ready to Reserve Your Spot?

Spaces in the Vineyard Collection workshops are limited — and as we mentioned, several dates have already sold out. To browse available dates, explore the full lineup of featured wineries (including the newly added Thirty Bench Wine Makers), and reserve your spot, visit our website or stop in to see us at 3725 King St, Vineland. Whether you’re planning a date night, a birthday, a girls’ night out, or simply a beautiful evening for yourself — the Vineyard Collection has a seat with your name on it.

Sip, Snip & Bloom This Summer

Don’t let your perfect winery evening sell out. Join us for the Vineyard Collection — fresh flowers, great wine, and the best summer night Niagara has to offer.

Patio Paradise, No Passport Required: Your Complete Guide to Majesty Palms Outdoors in Niagara

Every summer, they sweep back through our greenhouse like royalty arriving fashionably on cue — and every summer, Niagara patios get a little more spectacular. Majesty Palms are back at The Watering Can, available in two sizes while supplies last, and if you’ve been plotting a lush tropical corner since last October, this is your sign.

Why Majesty Palms Are Niagara’s Favourite Summer Tropical

There’s something undeniably transformative about a Majesty Palm. One well-placed specimen can turn a concrete balcony into a resort retreat, a front porch into a vacation destination, or a poolside corner into something that belongs on a travel magazine cover. They’re bold without being aggressive, lush without being fussy (once you know their preferences), and they carry an unmistakable sense of occasion wherever they land.

In Niagara’s climate — growing zone 6b, with our last spring frost around May 15th and our first fall frost around October 15th — Majesty Palms (Ravenea rivularis) thrive as seasonal outdoor plants from late May through early October. That gives you a generous four-plus months of pure tropical drama on your patio, balcony, pool area, or front porch. And because they’re container plants by nature, moving them indoors for winter is straightforward — meaning you can invest in a beautiful specimen and enjoy it for years.

Setting Up Your Majesty Palm for Outdoor Success

1

Choose the Right Location

Majesty Palms love bright light, but direct afternoon sun in our Niagara summers can scorch the fronds. Aim for a spot that gets full morning sun or bright, filtered light for most of the day. East-facing patios, spots dappled by a pergola overhead, or poolside locations shielded from the harshest west-facing sun are ideal. If your only option is full blazing sun, acclimate the plant gradually over a week rather than moving it straight from the greenhouse to the hottest corner of your yard.

2

Water Consistently — They’re Thirsty

Majesty Palms are native to the riverbanks of Madagascar, which tells you everything you need to know: they want consistent moisture. In containers outdoors during Niagara’s summer heat, that typically means watering every 1–3 days depending on temperature, pot size, and how exposed the location is. The top inch of soil should never fully dry out. Yellow lower fronds are often the first sign of underwatering. A saucer beneath the pot can help in heat waves, but don’t let the roots sit in standing water for extended periods.

3

Feed Through the Growing Season

Palms have specific nutrient needs — particularly magnesium, potassium, and manganese — that a standard balanced fertilizer can sometimes miss. Use a palm-specific slow-release fertilizer or a liquid palm fertilizer at half strength every 3–4 weeks from June through August. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which push weak, floppy growth. Stop fertilizing by early September as the plant begins winding down for its indoor season.

4

Bring Indoors Before Frost

In zone 6b Niagara, our average first fall frost arrives around October 15th — but watch your local forecast and aim to bring your Majesty Palm indoors by early to mid-October to be safe. Palms are tropical and will suffer damage below 10°C (50°F) and can be severely damaged or killed by frost. Before bringing it indoors, inspect the plant for pests (spider mites are especially common when transitioning to indoor air), give it a good shower, and place it in your brightest south or west-facing window for the winter.

💡 Zone 6b tip worth knowing: Majesty Palms can go outside once nighttime temperatures reliably stay above 10°C — typically after our May 15th last frost date. Rushing them out in a cold snap will stress the plant and stall its summer growth.

Keeping Your Palm Happy Through the Season

Beyond watering and feeding, a few seasonal habits will keep your Majesty Palm looking its best from June through October. Remove brown or dead fronds cleanly at the base — never pull them off, as this can damage the trunk. Rotate the pot every few weeks if it’s in a location with directional light, so growth stays balanced and full on all sides.

Humidity is another factor Majesty Palms appreciate. Outdoors, this usually isn’t an issue during our warm, humid Niagara summers — but if you’re placing the palm in an unusually exposed, windy spot, the constant air movement can dry out the fronds. A sheltered corner with good light is often the sweet spot. Misting the fronds on particularly hot days is a welcome treat for these tropical beauties.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Overwatering with poor drainage — Majesty Palms want moisture, but they also need drainage. Always use a pot with drainage holes. Root rot from waterlogged soil is one of the most common ways to lose a palm.

Skipping the hardening-off period — A palm that’s been living in a greenhouse or garden centre needs to be hardened off before it sits in full Niagara July sun. Give it a few days in a shadier spot first.

Using generic fertilizer — Standard fertilizers often lack the magnesium and manganese palms specifically crave. Yellowing fronds mid-summer, despite regular watering, is often a nutrient deficiency.

Waiting too long to bring it indoors — Cold nights arrive fast in Niagara. Set a reminder for early October to check nighttime forecasts and get your palm moved inside before that first surprise frost.

Cutting green fronds unnecessarily — Only remove fronds that are fully brown and dead. Green or even partially yellow fronds are still photosynthesizing and feeding the plant.

Two Sizes, Endless Possibilities

This year at The Watering Can, Majesty Palms are available in two sizes — a smaller size perfect for balconies, tight corners, or bringing a tropical touch to a front step, and a larger statement size for pool areas, wide patios, or anywhere you want to go truly lush and dramatic. Both sizes are available online and in store at our Vineland location at 3725 King St while supplies last.

Majesty Palms tend to move quickly once warm weather settles in — they’re one of those plants that people fall in love with on sight, and with good reason. Niagara’s growing season gives you a full, gorgeous outdoor run with these beauties, and a well-cared-for palm brought in for winter can return to your patio summer after summer. That’s not just a plant purchase — that’s a yearly tradition in the making.

Petals, People & a Whole Lot of Heart: Behind the Scenes This Mother’s Day

This Sunday is Mother’s Day — and here at The Watering Can, that means our flower shop floors are alive with activity, colour, and the kind of focused creative energy that only happens when passionate people are doing what they love. We wanted to pull back the curtain on the magic happening behind the scenes, because every bouquet you order has a real human heart behind it.

A WEEK OF BEAUTIFUL CHAOS

Mother’s Day is one of the biggest floral events of the year — and our team rises to the moment every single time. Designers arrive early, stay focused, and pour genuine care into every stem they touch.

EVERY DETAIL, CONSIDERED

From colour palettes to ribbon choices, our designers make dozens of micro-decisions per arrangement. Each piece is crafted to feel personal — not mass-produced. That’s the TWC difference.

EUROPEAN-INSPIRED DESIGN

Our signature style is lush, garden-gathered, and full of texture. Think unexpected foliage, seasonal blooms, and arrangements that feel like they were just plucked from a French countryside garden.

LOCAL LOVE, EVERY TIME

As Niagara’s European-inspired floral destination, we’re rooted in community — and Mother’s Day is when that community feeling is at its most beautiful. Family supporting family, neighbours surprising neighbours.

The People Behind Your Bouquet

It’s easy to see a finished arrangement and think of it as a product. But walk into our design studio during Mother’s Day week and you’ll quickly realize it’s anything but. Our designers are artists — each with their own eye for colour, texture, and proportion — working together under one joyful, slightly chaotic roof to create something truly special for the moms in your life.

From the first stems pulled from the cooler to the final bow tied, every bouquet and European arrangement that leaves our shop has been touched by real hands and real intention. Our team doesn’t just fill orders — they think about the person who will receive the flowers, and they make choices accordingly. That’s what being a Merchant of Happiness actually means.

Our designers have been working overtime this week — and every finishing touch, colour combo, and ribbon choice is made with your mom in mind. That’s the kind of care you can’t automate.

What Makes a TWC Mother’s Day Arrangement Different?

We don’t do basic. Our designers are trained in European floral traditions — which means abundant, textural, garden-inspired arrangements that feel entirely different from what you’d find at a grocery store. Every piece is built with intentional structure, seasonal colour, and a lushness that photographs beautifully and lasts in the vase.

Seasonal, fresh blooms — we source flowers that are at their peak right now, so they arrive vibrant and last longer in the home.

European arrangement style — lush, full, layered with interesting foliage and textures that grocery-store bunches can’t match.

Hand-designed by our team — no assembly-line arrangements here. Each piece is built one stem at a time by a real designer.

Custom colour palettes — our team considers the vibe, the occasion, and the recipient when choosing tones and combinations.

That special finishing touch — packaging, wrapping, ribbon, and presentation are all part of what makes a TWC bouquet feel like a real gift.

Why Preordering Is the Smart Move This Weekend

Mother’s Day weekend is one of our absolute busiest times of year — and for good reason. Thousands of people in Niagara are trying to do something beautiful for their moms at the same time. Walk-ins are always welcome, but preordering online is the smartest way to guarantee a stunning arrangement is ready and waiting for you, without the wait.

When you preorder, our designers can plan your arrangement in advance — choosing the freshest stems, the right colour palette, and giving each piece the time and attention it deserves. You simply show up, pick it up, and watch your mom’s face light up. Simple, beautiful, done.

Skip the Sunday scramble. Order online now for Mother’s Day pickup this weekend — your bouquet will be ready and waiting, designed with love by our incredible team. 💐

Not Just Bouquets — The Full Mother’s Day Experience

If you’re looking to make Mother’s Day truly memorable this year, consider bringing Mom to The Watering Can itself. Our Vineland location on King Street is a destination — equal parts greenhouse, café, workshop village, and floral paradise. There’s truly nothing else like it in Niagara.

Tropical Garden Tea — a gorgeous seated tea experience inside our greenhouse, at $47/person (Tues–Sat seatings). A perfect Mother’s Day treat if you plan ahead.

Pastry Market — all baked goods made in-house daily. Fresh, seasonal, and always worth stopping for.

Workshop Village — seasonal floral and planting workshops for all skill levels. A hands-on gift Mom will actually talk about.

Urn Club — if Mom loves her front porch, our seasonal planter insert club (Basic $200 / Premium $275/year) is a gift that keeps giving all season long.

Fresh flower boutique in St. Catharines — our 18 James St location is the perfect stop if you’re in the city and need something beautiful, fast.

A Note of Gratitude From Our Team

This time of year is a grind — a beautiful, meaningful, petal-covered grind. Our designers work long hours and pour enormous energy into making sure every single customer walks away with something they’re proud to give. They don’t do it for the overtime. They do it because they genuinely love flowers, love their craft, and love being part of moments that matter.

So the next time you hand someone a bouquet from The Watering Can, know that it carried a little piece of someone’s heart with it. That’s not marketing. That’s just the truth of how we work.

Mother’s Day is one week away, and we’ve made it easier than ever to give Mom something truly special — something she can make, savour, and remember. Our limited-time Mother’s Day DIY Kits are now available to order online, and they’re everything we love: a little creativity, a little sweetness, and a whole lot of heart.

WHAT’S IN THE KIT

A thoughtfully curated floral DIY experience — sweet floral designs, all the materials you need, and something delicious to enjoy while you create. It’s a full sensory moment wrapped up and ready to go.

WHO IT’S FOR

Mom, Grandma, your favourite auntie, or anyone who deserves something special this Mother’s Day. Perfect for the creative spirit and the sweet tooth alike — no experience required.

HOW TO ORDER

Visit thewateringcan.ca or follow the link in our Instagram bio @thewateringcan to order yours online. Kits are available for a limited time only — don’t wait until they’re gone!

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

It’s hands-on, heartfelt, and genuinely fun. Create something beautiful together or gift it so she can enjoy the experience at her own pace. Either way, it’s the kind of gift that feels deeply personal.

Why DIY Is the Most Thoughtful Gift

There’s something uniquely meaningful about giving someone an experience, not just an object. A DIY kit says: “I thought about what would make you smile, what would give you a moment just for yourself.” In a world of gift cards and rushed decisions, choosing a kit that invites someone to slow down, create, and enjoy is genuinely special.

At The Watering Can, we’ve always believed that flowers and creativity belong together. Whether it’s one of our Workshop Village classes or a beautifully designed DIY Kit, there’s something magical about putting your hands into the process and making something bloom — literally or figuratively. That philosophy is baked into every kit we design.

These kits are designed to be enjoyed together or solo — make it a Mother’s Day activity with the whole family, or gift it so Mom can savour the experience entirely on her own time.

A Little Creativity, A Little Sweet

What makes our Mother’s Day DIY Kits so special is the combination of elements. You’re not just getting craft supplies — you’re getting a curated moment. The floral designs are beautiful and achievable, and the sweet treat element adds that extra layer of joy that takes the whole experience from “fun craft” to “perfect afternoon.”

We designed these kits with every kind of mom in mind: the one who loves to make things, the one who deserves a pampering creative break, and yes, the one who simply loves flowers and sweets in equal measure. Which, honestly, sounds like everyone we know.

Five Reasons to Give a DIY Kit This Mother’s Day

It’s an experience, not just a thing — Experiential gifts are consistently rated more meaningful than physical objects. The kit creates a memory, not just a moment.

No experience needed — Our kits are designed for all skill levels. Whether Mom has never touched a flower arrangement or is a seasoned crafter, she’ll love the process.

It travels beautifully — Ordering online means you can have it ready to give no matter where Mother’s Day is being celebrated this year.

It’s made with TWC love — Everything we put our name on comes from the same family-run spirit that’s guided The Watering Can for over 25 years in Niagara.

It’s genuinely limited — These kits are available for a short time only. When they’re gone, they’re gone — so ordering early means peace of mind.

Who Deserves One of These Kits?

The short answer? Everyone on your Mother’s Day list. The longer answer is that these kits are especially perfect for the mom who seems to have everything, the grandma who appreciates the thought behind a gift, or the friend who is mothering everyone around her and deserves to be celebrated right back.

They’re also a wonderful option if you’re looking for something that goes beyond a bouquet. Don’t get us wrong — we love a gorgeous arrangement (it’s kind of our thing). But a DIY Kit adds a layer of interactivity and personal charm that makes it stand out. You’re gifting creativity, time, and beauty all at once.

How to Get Your Kit Before It’s Gone

Ordering is easy — head to thewateringcan.ca and look for our Mother’s Day DIY Kits in the shop. You can also follow the link in our Instagram bio @thewateringcan for the fastest route. We recommend ordering sooner rather than later — these are a limited-time offering and sell through quickly as Mother’s Day approaches.

Have questions? Give us a call at 905-562-0088 or pop into our Vineland location at 3725 King St, Vineland ON. Our team is always happy to help you find the perfect gift for the special people in your life.

While You’re Here: More Ways to Celebrate Mom at TWC

If you’re looking to make Mother’s Day truly unforgettable, our Vineland destination has no shortage of ways to celebrate. Book a Tropical Garden Tea ($47/person, Tues–Sat seatings) for an enchanting afternoon inside our greenhouse surrounded by lush tropicals. Browse fresh blooms and handcrafted arrangements at our St. Catharines floral boutique at 18 James St. Pick up something sweet from our Pastry Market, baked fresh in-house every single day.

And if you want to give Mom something she’ll return to all season long, ask about our Urn Club — seasonal planter inserts delivered right to your door, starting at $200/year. It’s the gift that keeps on blooming.

It’s officially a holiday, apparently. World Naked Gardening Day lands on the first Saturday of May every year, and while the concept is… shall we say, breezy… the spirit behind it is one we fully embrace: get outside, connect with your garden, and remember why getting your hands in the soil feels so incredibly good. Around here, Michelle said no. We’ll be keeping things fully clothed, fully watered, and mostly supervised — but there has never been a better excuse to get into your Niagara garden this weekend.

🌿

The Holiday Explained

World Naked Gardening Day began in 2005 as a playful celebration of body acceptance and connecting with nature. It falls on the first Saturday of May — and yes, it is a real thing. We chose to celebrate with gardening gloves on.

🧤

The TWC Version

Clothes firmly on. Coffee firmly in hand. Soil firmly under the fingernails. That is our version of communing with nature — and honestly, it is just as satisfying. Possibly more so.

🌡️

Zone 6b in May

Niagara sits in growing zone 6b. Average last frost falls around May 15th — which means right now, your garden is waking up fast and there is real planting to be done this weekend.

🌱

What’s Ready to Go

Hardy annuals, cool-season vegetables, perennials, and container planters are all fair game right now. Tender tropicals and warm-season crops need just another week or two of patience.

A Very Brief History of the Holiday

World Naked Gardening Day was the brainchild of naturist advocates who believed that gardening — one of humanity’s oldest and most grounding activities — should be experienced as close to nature as possible. Since 2005, it has been celebrated in gardens, backyards, and greenhouses around the world on the first Saturday of May. The message at its core is a good one: slow down, step outside, feel the earth, and appreciate the living world growing around you. We are absolutely behind that message. The rest of it we will leave to the naturalists.

The Spirit We Can All Get Behind

Strip away the headlines and what you are left with is a genuinely beautiful idea — that gardening is a form of reconnection. With the earth, with the seasons, with the simple satisfaction of making something grow. There is real science behind why digging in soil lifts your mood: Mycobacterium vaccae, a naturally occurring soil bacterium, has been shown to trigger the release of serotonin in the brain. Getting your hands dirty literally makes you happier. So whether you garden fully clothed, in your oldest jeans and a faded hoodie, or somewhere in between — get outside this weekend. Your garden and your nervous system will both thank you.

What’s Happening in Niagara Gardens Right Now

In zone 6b, early May is one of the most exciting and productive weeks of the entire gardening year. The soil is warming, the days are lengthening, and a whole category of plants is just waiting for you to put them in the ground. Niagara’s climate gives gardeners a longer growing window than most of Ontario — with mild lake-influenced temperatures moderated by Lake Ontario and Lake Erie — but we are not fully frost-free yet. Average last frost in the Niagara region falls around May 15th, so this weekend is the sweet spot for cool-season plants and early planters.

🌡️ Zone 6b Frost Reminder: Niagara’s average last frost is approximately May 15th. Hardy annuals and cool-season vegetables are safe to plant now. Hold off on tender tropicals, basil, and heat-lovers until after the long weekend.

What You Can Plant This Weekend in Zone 6b

The following plants are ready to go into your Niagara garden right now, in early May:

Pansies & violas — frost-hardy down to –5°C, perfect for containers, window boxes, and garden beds. Still the best bang for your spring dollar.

Snapdragons — love the cool weather and will bloom beautifully right through June before summer heat slows them down.

Calibrachoa & bacopa — trailing annuals that thrive in containers; both tolerate light frost and will fill out quickly once night temps are consistently above 5°C.

Dianthus & alyssum — reliable, fragrant cool-season bloomers that do beautifully in Niagara springs.

Lettuce, spinach & kale — direct sow or transplant now; they prefer cool soil and will bolt in summer heat, so plant early and harvest often.

Perennials — any containerised perennial (hostas, coneflowers, ornamental grasses) can go in the ground now with no hesitation.

Outdoor urns & planters — if your urn is in a sheltered spot, go for it. Choose cool-season combinations: thriller, filler, spiller with hardy varieties.

What to Wait On

Not everything is ready yet — and patience here will save you a lot of heartache. The following plants need Niagara’s soil to be reliably warm and frost risk to be gone, which typically means after May 15th or even the May long weekend:

Tropical houseplants outdoors — wait until nights are consistently above 10°C. Moving them outside too early causes stress and leaf damage.

Basil — deeply frost-sensitive and sulks in cold soil. May 24 weekend is the traditional safe window in zone 6b.

Tomatoes, peppers & cucumbers — need warm nights and warm soil. After May 15th at the earliest; May 24 is safer.

Impatiens & begonias — both frost-tender. Hold until after the long weekend for outdoor containers.

🌸 Pro Tip: Bring tender plants outside during warm days and back in overnight — this process, called hardening off, acclimates them to outdoor conditions before planting and dramatically improves their survival rate.

Getting Your Hands Properly Dirty — The TWC Way

Whether you are planting up a new urn, refreshing your front porch containers, or finally getting that perennial bed sorted out, here is how we approach a productive May gardening session: start with great soil. Work in compost or a quality potting mix. Choose plants suited to your light conditions — if you are not sure, ask us. Water in transplants thoroughly after planting, and add a light layer of mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Then step back, admire your work, and reward yourself with something from the café. You have earned it.

Come Get Your Hands Dirty With Us

Our Vineland location is fully stocked with everything you need for a productive May garden — from pansies and snapdragons to perennials, soil, containers, and expert advice. Our team knows Niagara’s growing conditions inside and out, and we are always happy to help you find the right plants for your space, your light, and your zone 6b timeline. And if you are an Urn Club member, your Spring insert is ready for pickup through April 20th — so do not leave it too long.

Visit us in Vineland or St. Catharines this weekend. The soil is warm, the plants are gorgeous, and the garden is calling — clothes optional, but strongly recommended.
